Food for Thought

Baltimore Museum of Industry

"Centering the voice and importance of a vital role in society that often goes overlooked."

"Food for Thought" is an exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Industry that honors the food service workers who prepare and distribute over 88,000 meals daily to Baltimore City Public School students. Designed by Ashton Design and opened in February 2023, the exhibit presents striking portraits and personal narratives that elevate these underrecognized workers - presenting them as the superheroes they are.

Aether Immersive developed the automated system that powers the exhibit's centerpiece: a synchronized lighting and audio experience built around the cafeteria worker testimonials. Using a Lutron lighting system controlled by a Raspberry Pi, individual overhead spotlights illuminate each portrait in sequence as the corresponding worker's audio story plays - creating an intimate, theatrical moment that draws visitors into each person's narrative.

We also designed a custom management UI for museum staff to monitor and control the system status, ensuring reliable day-to-day operation of the installation. The exhibition was awarded a Merit Award by SEGD in 2024.
